THE SECRETS OF BLUE CYPRESS: CHEMICAL FOCUS

1/11/2017

Easily identified by its magnificent blue-green color, blue cypress essential oil has been used for centuries by Australian aborigines due to the wide variety of health and beauty benefits it offers. Composed of more than 30 constituents, two of blue cypress oil’s primary active ingredients, guaiol and guaiazulene, are largely responsible for its amazing benefits. Here’s a quick look at just a few of the ways blue cypress essential oil benefits your health.

The Combination of Guaiol and Guaiazulene

Together, guaiol and guaiazulene account for as much as 30% of blue cypress oil’s chemical makeup and together, they give the oil its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and anti-pyretic qualities. For example, cypress oil has effectively cleared congestion, stopped the buildup of phlegm in the lungs and respiratory tract, and put an end to coughing caused by asthma, bronchitis, and colds [2]. This is largely due to its antispasmodic properties, which blocks the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain and prevents it from binding with receptors.

Blue cypress also effectively stimulates blood flow, thanks to its combination of active ingredients. By stimulating blood flow, it works to soothe broken capillaries in the skin, which helps soothe hemorrhoids and varicose veins [3].

In a 2014 study published in Complementary & Alternative Medicine, it was found that the combination of constituents in blue cypress oil possess antimicrobial qualities that not only stopped the growth of various bacteria and fight off infections, but also proved to be beneficial in the treatment of pimples, sores, and other skin eruptions by effectively killing off existing bacteria [3].
